Vicki Walton & K9 Solo

Vicki joined the team in 2003. She is a SARTECH II and serves as KSARDA's Southern Region Deputy Director. Vicki is a NASAR SARTECH II Evaluator. Vicki is a trained Weather Spotter and is certified in Adult/Child First Aid/CPR, as well as Pet First Aid/CPR. She and her K9 Solo became an Operational Wilderness Search Team in April 2005. Vicki and Solo attained NASAR K9 SARTECH Area Search I and Disaster Responder credentials in 2008 and in 2009 attained NASAR HRD Water Type II credential. Vicki and Solo are members of the Kansas City Metro USAR team. They have been deployed on several searches, including the May 2007 Greensburg Tornado disaster and the June 2008 Chapman Tornado, among others. Vicki is also a presenter of the Lost But Found, Safe and Sound program.

Vicki has attended many SAR training seminars, both as a K9 Handler and as the purely human component. Some of those specialty seminars include Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), water search, trailing, lost person behavior, hazmat symposium, risk communication, responding to terrorism, scent theory, Kansas boater safety, crime scene preservation, US Attorney Citizens' Academy, to name a few. She has many FEMA course certificates, including IS-100 Incident Command, IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents, FEMA IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS) an Introduction, IS-702 NIMS Public Information Systems, IS-800.A An Introduction to National Response Plan, IS-5.A An Introduction to Hazardous Materials, and IS-241 Decision Making & Problem Solving. In addition, Vicki is a member of the Sedgwick County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Vicki retired from the paralegal profession in April 2004 after working 28 years for Foulston Siefkin Law Firm. Vicki won a battle against breast cancer in 1989. Since that time, she has done volunteer work for Victory in the Valley, a statewide cancer support network based in Wichita. Vicki leads its Breast Cancer Support Group, coordinates the Breast Cancer Friends Program, and also coordinates the Canine Friends (therapy dog) Program. Her love of animals and people makes these various volunteer efforts perfect for Vicki. Besides her SAR K9 Partner Solo, Vicki also has a Labrador Retriever, and misses her other Labrador Therapy Dog partner who passed in May 2009.

Solo is a pure-bred Border Collie born to working cattle-herding parents and grandparents on June 1, 2003. Vicki looked long and hard to find her perfect SAR teammate and was overjoyed when she found Solo when he was just 12 weeks old on the Missouri-Kansas Border Collie Rescue website. Solo joined Vicki's pack 4 weeks later. Although Vicki's therapy dog is a Labrador, she chose a Border Collie because of the breed's drive, focus, and energy.

Solo has passed basic and advanced obedience and basic agility classes. He has his Canine Good Citizen credential. Solo is KSARDA Wilderness Search Certified as of April 2005. In June 2008, Solo achieved NASAR K9 SARTECH I Area Search and K9 Disaster Responder certification. In April 2009, Solo achieved NASAR K9 HRD Water certification. Solo is a K9 member of the Kansas City Metro USAR team.

Whatever Solo likes, Vicki plans to pursue with him. Solo is an ardent student and loves to work, and is a very quick learner. Solo is currently focussing on HRD Land and Water search skills. He will be testing soon for operational status in both disciplines.
