All of the KSARDA teams receive between 9-12 months training in wilderness search
as part of their basic operational training. All operational teams have completed their
20 acre day, 40 acre night, and 160 acre multiple victim day search evaluations as part
of the wilderness training. Upon completion, the teams are encouraged to train in any
of the other specialties listed below.

KSARDA uses Sigma Drowned Victim scent to train our teams in water search. Our Founder
is also certified as a Dive Rescue Specialist I through the International Association
of Dive Rescue Specialists. We use wind data supplied from the National Weather Service
to assist us in determining the highest Area of Probability and to establish search patterns.
The Army Corps of Engineers provides us with the out-flow rates to determine current velocity. Finally, topographic maps of the lake are used to show the depth and the direction of current.
We have assisted agencies in locating drowning victims in Wilson Lake, the Kansas River, Milford Reservoir, El Dorado Lake, Cheney Lake, Wolf Creek Lake, Clark County Lake, and several other lakes and streams.

Our northern team utilizes a 2 acre rubble field for our disaster training and the southern team
utilizes the rubble and trash pit sites at Cornejo & Sons. KSARDA also trains at sites of buildings
that are in the process of being torn down around the city with special permission. The disaster
specialty teams are trained in disaster hazards and safety.
We can locate both live and deceased victims. Some of our team members have High-Angle Rescue training and we have special harnesses for both handlers and dogs, both of which were utilized in the Debruce Grain Elevator explosion of 1998.
We also provided Search Dogs for the F4 Tornado that struck Wichita/Haysville in 1999, the F5 that struck Oklahoma City in 1999, the F3 Tornado that struck Parsons in 2000, and the F4 Tornado that struck Hoisington in 2001.
