On July 18th, KSARDA's founder, Dave Meek, presented the first of two power point instructions on Search Management during civil search and rescues. The last hour was spent working a table-top mock search management with 20 attending members split into 5 groups. Next month, we will be discussing disaster search and rescue. We'd like to thank Dave for coming down from Topeka to share this knowledge and expertise with us on a Sunday afternoon.

Warehouse Search Warehouse Search

With thanks to "KSARDA Friend", Jan Long, the team was able to do search training in a vacant warehouse for 2 weekends. The team also worked on getting the K9s used to a rapelling harness. The warehouse was a fantastic training facility and the K9s did a great job being fitted and raised in the harness!

KSARDA has participated in a couple vacant building search trainings recently. Both buildings are slated to be demolished in the future, but provide KSARDA with excellent training locales. Kansas Turnpike Memorial

turnpike

On November 20, 2003, KSARDA was invited to the Kansas Turnpike Memorial in honor of the 6 victims who perished in the Emporia/Turnpike flood in August/September 2003. The memorial park at the Matfield Green service area has a special memorial in honor of Al Larsen, who died while trying to save victims stranded by the rising waters. Some of the KSARDA team members from both the Northern and Southern Region that aided in the search effort were able to attend the memorial.

Sandi spoke with Governor Sebilius before the memorial ceremony. The Governor recognized KSARDAs efforts with a thank you note following the search. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims families of this devestating tragedy.

Crime Scene Preservation Class

csi class

With special thanks to the Wichita Police Department and especially to Crime Scene Investigator Andrew Maul, KSARDA attended a Crime Scene Preservation Class at the WPD South Substation on April 25. KSARDA had 23 members attending (including Dale Stelz who took the photograph). Crime Scene Preservation is extremely important in searches where a possible crime has been committed to prevent contaminated or destroyed evidence during the search. Officer Maul tailored his presentation to situations that our team would encounter on wilderness and cadaver searches. It was a very informative presentation and KSARDA extends our gratitude to Officer Maul and the Wichita Police Department for the presentation, their help, and accomodations! We look forward to working with them in the near future!

Yappy Days 2004

yappy days

yappy days

For the 2nd straight year, KSARDA participated in the 2nd Annual Yappy Days on March 20th, sponsored by Clear Channel Communications. The first annual Yappy Days in September of 2003 helped bring in many new members to KSARDAs team. Those new members were able to represent KSARDA this March for the newest Yappy Days. Billed as "A Celebration of Dogs and the People Who Love Them", Yappy Days certainly lived up to that. Look for KSARDA at the 2005 Yappy Days and stop by and say "Hi!".

McConnell Family Days 2004

little boy family days

In April, KSARDA attended the 2004 McConnell Family Days. The McConnell families were able to learn all about KSARDA and got to meet the K9s. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and KSARDA was thankful for the opportunity to attend!
