Chris Nations & K9 Cooter

Chris Chris relocated to Kansas from South Carolina in July 2006 and joined KSARDA in October 2007, fulfilling a lifetime dream of training a SAR K9 and working with a skilled SAR team. Chris serves as KSARDA's Southern Region Duty Officer. Chris is employed by Sears Holdings Corporation as a Loss Prevention Manager. In addition, Chris works part-time serving the needs of the small community of Belle Plaine as an Emergency Medical Technician with Belle Plaine EMS. Chris also volunteers with the Sedgwick County EMS Reserves and, upon completion of his advanced training in April 2009, will become an active member of its Disaster Medical Support Unit.

Chris is certified by the National Association for Search and Rescue as a Search and Rescue Technician II. He holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Public Service with a Criminal Justice major. Chris is also a nationally certified Emergency Medical Technician and began his studies for an Associate in Applied Sciences in Emergency Medicine in August 2009. Once completed, Chris will be certified as a Mobile Intensive Care Technician. In December 2008, Chris obtained national certification for Hazardous Materials - Operations Level from the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute. Completed FEMA courses include IS-100 Incident Command System; IS-00100.HC Incident Command for Health Care; IS-00200.a ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents; IS-00292 Disaster Basics; IS-00700 NIMS; IS-00800.b National Response Framework. Also completed through Texas A&M University Systems, Texas Engineering Extension Service, are Canine Emergency Medical Care and Emergency Management Concerns for First Responders in Terrorism and Disasters. In addition, Chris completed Basic Concepts for Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents and Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism Awareness for Emergency Responders through The National Emergency Response & Rescue Training Center, in College Station, Texas.

Chris is veteran of the United States Navy where he served as an Aviation Ordananceman and a Ship's Master-at-Arms on board the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). Before moving to Kansas and following his military service, Chris served his community in upstate South Carolina as a Class II Peace Officer for the Greenville County Department of Public Safety, achieving the rank of Sergeant of Professional Standards, Training, Hiring and Recruitment. Additionally, Chris was a South Carolina Certified Emergency Medical Technician, an Amercian Red Cross Instructor, and a Certified State Law Enforcement Instructor.

Wilderness Trainee

Chris is currently in the process of training his K9 partner Cooter in Wilderness Search and hopes to become operational by December 2009.
