Our team schedules one to two training sessions per week. New handlers receive between 12 and 18 months of wilderness search training before their evaluations. Additional training is provided after they reach operational status as follows: Water Search (6 months); Cadaver Search (6-12 months); Disaster/Collapsed Stucture Search (6-12 months). Copies of our training standards are available upon request.
Handlers and non-handlers receive training in foot-searching/man-tracking techniques and are required to pass the SAR Technician testing provided by the National Association for Search and Rescue. Handlers must test to the SAR Tech II level (written exam and six practical stations) to become Operational. We currently have two SAR Tech Coordinators for NASAR; one is a SAR Tech I, the highest level currently offered. The Coordinators provide both local and regional testing. Team records are kept on file indefinitely.
